Bologna is a notoriously man-sized city: when you move around the old town, where all the main attractions are situated, you can forget about cars, motorbikes, and even public transportation!
The simplest and easiest ways to explore Bologna’s old town are walking and biking! Using a bicycle allows you to move swiftly from one place to the other with less physical effort, while still being able to experience Bologna in first person and dive into the life of the city. In case you wish to explore our city on two wheels, here at the Art Hotel Commercianti we will be happy to assist you: our Guests can enjoy our bike service for free, all you need to do is ask at the reception!
Biking can also be a great way to enjoy the green areas that Bologna has to offer. Most notably, the Margherita Gardens: just outside the city walls, between porta Castiglione and Porta Santo Stefano, is located the vast and enchanting 26 hectares park.
Inaugurated in the year 1879, the Gardens still preserve most of their original asset, inspired by English romantic parks. The park is crossed by ample and suggestive tree-lined paths, in which you can stroll under the shade of tilia, oaks, cedar trees and other native species. You can breathe in the smell of flowers and the atmosphere of the real Bologna, the one experienced everyday by the locals. Biking through the streets of Margherita Gardens is also a wonderful way to enjoy the sun and the nature during the spring and summer, as well as to admire the stunning colours of autumn leaves and the melancholic charm of the Bologna winter.
For our most adventurous guests, an itinerary to be considered is the Ciclovia delle Antiche Paludi Bolognesi (Cycle path of the Ancient Bologna Swamps). This itinerary winds for 45 km through the area
here vast swamps once dominated the scenery, replaced today by a lovely rural landscape dotted with woods, ancient villas, and museums. Since our city bikes are not fit for this kind of terrain, we kindly suggest you rent other types of bikes in external stores.
